Phytonutrients from the Ocean

Fucoidans are bioactive compounds found in seaweed that offer a number of health benefits including fast-acting support for joints, normalizing blood pressure, and immune health...

Iodine from kelp, omega-3's and cod liver oil are just 3 of the many important supplements that come from the Earth's oceans. Now we can add fucoidans to this list.

Seaweeds have been part of the human diet and used therapeutically for millennia. The main seaweed in the Japanese daily diet is Undaria pinnatifida, commonly known as Wakame. The high intake of seaweed in the Japanese diet is associated with a number of important health benefits including protecting cells, normailzing the inflammatory response, promoting heart health, and supporting blood sugar regulation.

Fucoidan is one of the key bioactive constituents of Wakame seaweed and one which is considered to be responsible for many of its health benefits. In living Wakame, fucoidan acts as a protective agent guarding the plant against environmental pathogens. Fucoidan is a polysaccharide that is not metabolised in the intestine; however, studies involving ingestion of fucoidan from Wakame have demonstrated the following benefits, just to name a few:

• supporting a normal blood pressure
• enhancing the ability of the body to fight viruses
• immune health

We have discovered what we believe is the first and only source of Maritech certified organic fucoidans from the Australian biotech company, Marinova. Maritech® fucoidan extracts are made from organic-certified brown seaweed which are wild-grown in pristine and clean ocean waters remote from industrial and human pollution. The brown seaweeds are hand-harvested by professional divers on an environmentally sustainable basis. Maritech fucoidan extracts are certified Organic, Halal and Kosher. No solvents or other chemicals are used during Marinova's proprietary extraction process.

Human clinical trials undertaken in Australia by Marinova have shown that Undaria fucoidan can stimulate the immune system and reduce inflammation markers. Other human trials undertaken by Marinova have shown that this type of fucoidan has potent antiviral activity and can improve healing times. In vitro trials have also shown that Undaria fucoidan can also support the healthy metabolism of glucose, inhibit skin ageing processes and processes associated with dementia. Human clincial trials have repeatedly demonstrated that ingestion of fucoidan is safe, with no adverse reactions or changes to blood chemistry.

NutritionalFinds.com, a division of Natural Discoveries LLC, announced today that they have been granted the exclusive rights to represent a new combination of 3 fucoidans, Maritech® Joint Blend bioactive, for nutraceutical applications in North America. Maritech® Joint blend is a proprietary, certified organic combination of 3 unique fucoidans extracted from seaweed which has been clinically proven safe and effective for reducing the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Recent human clinical research (Biologics: Targets & Therapy 2010:4 33-44) conducted at Southern Cross University NatMed Research Centre demonstrated that the natural seaweed extract can reduce osteoarthritis symptoms in some patients by up to 52%. Fucoidans are bioactive polysaccharides thought to be responsible for many of the health benefits attributed to brown seaweeds such as wakame.

The natural Maritech® extract used in the clinical trials is derived from seaweed species growing in the pristine ocean waters of Patagonia and Nova Scotia. Maritech® extract  is suitable for consumers with seafood and shellfish allergies. Furthermore, data has shown Maritech® provides relief very quickly. Marinova's Senior Scientist, Dr Helen Fitton, said "A particularly exciting finding from this trial is that both groups of patients who took the Maritech® seaweed extract felt a significant reduction in pain after just one week of treatment."
